Purple what?

2019 Raikoke Eruption  (NASA photo)
You’ve heard of purple rain...  Well now there’s purple sky.

The Russian volcano that erupted last June is the gift that keeps on giving.  Its “particulate matter” continues to “reflect or refract sunlight,” resulting in royal hues.  This accounts for some recent purple sunsets within the United States.

This Raikoke incident was a relatively minor one.  Back in 1815, a mighty eruption of Mount Tambora precipitated the “year without summer.”  Due to heavy amounts of ash and sulfur dioxide within the atmosphere, temperatures then dropped an average of 5.4º F the world over.
