Wrecked Bow of RMS Titanic (NOAA photo) |
As
the great ship lies on the bottom of the Atlantic, “metal-munching bacteria” are
hard at work. Appropriately named H. titanicae, they love
snacking on iron.
As this occurs, Titanic-based iron “will end
up in the ocean.” Marine flora and fauna
can imbibe the metallic treat. If people later eat this very same
seafood, then recycled bits of the
mighty ship will set sail once again
– within human bloodstreams.
