Catty about Cats

Peek-a-boo!    (Photo by Jaspjd)
People have the tendency to underestimate a cat’s capacity for bonding with humans.  Pet felines are then insulted with adjectives such as “aloof.”

Fortunately, science has come out on the side of Kitty.  Current Biology recently published the results of a study by Kristyn Vitale and her team at Oregon State University.  By studying the interactions of pets with their owners, researchers have found that “cats display a range of social behavior.”

This is not to say that scientists know for sure what pets are feeling.  Nevertheless, there are behavioral indications that domestic cats can indeed bond with humans.  Even those
that appear aloof may be showing affection by remaining within the same room as people.
