Understanding Understaffing

Understaffing is at the root of many a nursing-home mishap.

Few outsiders understand that numerous nursing homes rely upon a “loan-guarantee program run by the Department of Housing and Urban Development [HUD].”  It’s also relatively unknown that HUD has been lax about overseeing these homes.

Even when HUD has managed to detect problems, it has often “been slow to respond.”  This has resulted in tragic outcomes such as deaths from neglect.

Professor David Stevenson from Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine warns that HUD needs to “figure out ways to act before [more?] people are harmed.”  In other words, better late than never…

Walking Proud

Hybrid Assistive Limb   (Steve Jurvetson)
Whereas some walk miles to their pilgrimage destination, Anna Sarol walked steps across her graduation stage.

These steps were her pilgrimage: a long hard journey to get back on her feet.  Sarol, now 18, took a gymnastics fall some years ago and “became paralyzed from the waist down.”

True grit, plus support from “braces, a walker and her siblings,” enabled Sarol to meet this graduation goal.  She now looks forward to walking on her own, with the future addition of a “prosthetic exoskeleton.”

Boggling the Mind with Love and Prayer

Trebeck in 2007  (Photo by Nestor Cruz)
Steeped in love and prayer, Alex Trebeck has responded amazingly well to chemotherapy.

Some of his tumors have shrunk to half their former size, a blessing that Trebeck says is “mind-boggling.”  His doctors fully agree.  Such wonderful results are rarely seen in cases of advanced pancreatic cancer.

Trebeck intends to keep working while heading toward full remission.  Which just goes to show: A steadfast mindset like his can never be fully boggled.
