DART Spacecraft (NASA/JHU APL artist's image) |
That’s the idea behind NASA’s testing of
asteroid defenses. In 2021, its Double Asteroid
Redirection Test (DART) craft will
be heading for “the smaller half of a
binary asteroid.” If all goes according to
plan, a hoped-for impact will redirect the
path of this space rock.
A
“nudge” such as this could one day save Earth
from massive destruction. Over time, even
a slight redirection could be magnified enough
to avoid a planetary strike. It is therefore
imperative to anticipate and deflect
such collisions years in advance.
