We're all in this together

Rather than utilizing precious resources to annihilate one another, why not focus upon saving all earthlings instead?

That’s the idea behind NASA’s testing of asteroid defenses.  In 2021, its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) craft will be heading for “the smaller half of a binary asteroid.”  If all goes according to plan, a hoped-for impact will redirect the path of this space rock.

A “nudge” such as this could one day save Earth from massive destruction.  Over time, even a slight redirection could be magnified enough to avoid a planetary strike.  It is therefore imperative to anticipate and deflect such collisions years in advance.
