Signing (Photo by David Fulmer) |
Emerson,
a lab mix, was rescued by NFR
Maine. He was not only suffering from
canine parvovirus, but was also hard
of hearing. Although his siblings had
been quickly adopted, Emerson was still waiting for a forever home.
Then
along came Nick Abbott, a 31-year-old
congenitally deaf man. His first meeting with
Emerson seemed magical, as “the dog came
right to him and sat at his feet.”
After
choosing one another, the two began communicating
with sign language. The letter
S means “sit,” and a sweeping hand motion
“across in a straight line” means “lie
down.”
