Few outsiders understand that
numerous nursing homes rely upon a “loan-guarantee
program run by the Department
of Housing and Urban Development
[HUD].” It’s also relatively unknown that HUD has been
lax about overseeing these homes.
Even
when HUD has managed to detect
problems, it has often “been slow
to respond.” This has resulted in
tragic outcomes such as deaths from
neglect.
Professor
David Stevenson from Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine
warns that HUD needs to “figure
out ways to act before [more?] people
are harmed.” In other words, better
late than never…
