Celebrating Ramadan

Ramadan in Jerusalem  (by Kmhad)
People associate Ramadan with strict fasting, but there are many additional ways to honor this sacred time of year.

Going without food and drink for specified times can be difficult, but going with “gossiping, cursing, complaining, and arguing” can be even more so.   Nevertheless, these are all Ramadan ways of strengthening discipline, patience, tolerance and kindness.

Reading the Qu'ran is especially important during this holy month.  Some read one chapter each day, others read the entire book numerous times.  Reading then becomes the basis for implementing scriptural teachings into daily life.

Nightly prayers called tarawih are emphasized, as well as reflections upon self-improvement.  Special classes are held at local mosques, and study also occurs through online venues.  Community building is fostered during iftar evening meals.

Houses are decorated with lanterns, lights, and even “crescent moon Ramadan trees.” Special foods are eaten, and gifts are exchanged during the three-day final celebration of Eid al-fitr.
