Pele's Pardon

Pele     (by Arthur Johnsen)
Pele must have been in an especially magnanimous mood after a man fell into her Kilauea clutches.

The gentleman, a soldier in training, had climbed over the safety railing in order to get a better look at the goddess’ alleged home.  Humans don’t easily get away with such trespassing.  Pele decided to teach him a thing or two about respectful boundaries.

Known for her jealousy and power (a dangerous combination), Pele could have done much worse.  When the man fell toward her steamy trap, he could have dissipated within a lava-laden moment.  Instead, he landed on a “narrow ledge about 70 feet down.”

Although "seriously injured," he might want to count his blessings.  Not all that many have survived Pele’s hot-tempered passion.
