Guardians of the Jungle

The Waorani nation of the Ecuadorian Amazon emerged victoriously from a recent protest against the use of their land for “oil exploration.”

Nevertheless, Ecuador’s government has warned that Waorani territory “could still be subject to future drilling.”

The Waorani are therefore fighting an uphill battle for self-determination.  They fear that oil drilling will not only destroy the jungle, but also their culture.  Six other nearby nations share these pressing concerns.

Environmental activists within Latin America are becoming more and more of an endangered group.  Hundreds have been violently attacked by “supporters of mining, logging, and other industries.”
