This
cross had been brought to Namibia
by the Portugese back in
1486. It stood at Cape Cross for
centuries, asserting Portugal’s territorial
claim.
Adding
insult to injury, that region was
later annexed by the “German colonial
empire.” In 1893, the Stone Cross
was taken to Deutschland.
Germany
is now returning the cross to Namibia
“as a gesture of reconciliation” regarding
“its colonial past.”
