than a hundred nations recently “agreed
to strengthen protections for 18
threatened species of sharks and rays.” Mako sharks, “highly valued for
their meat and fins,” are included within
this agreement.
Nevertheless,
40 countries (including China
and New Zealand) refused to sign
on. Some are claiming a lack of
substantiation for these protections, even though said species have been rapidly
dwindling.
