Greater Adria broke off from North Africa approximately 140 million years ago.
It ended up buried under Southern Europe where it remains today.
Current mountain ranges in that area, such as the Alps, are actually rocky remnants of this continent. The rest of Greater Adria “plunged “into the earth’s mantle.”
