Porous Pumice (Photo by MPF) |
The
byproduct of volcanic eruptions, pumice
is lighter than water and therefore floats. A huge pumice “raft” is currently making
its way toward Australia’s Great Barrier
Reef. Upon arrival, its colony of marine
organisms will help to replenish that
ailing ecosystem.
This
particular sheet of lightweight stone stretches
“about 58 square miles – nearly the
size of Washington, D.C.” However, it’s
a lot more eco-friendly than some of the dictates from
that city.
