Bruised Planet

Chelyabinsk Meteor Size Comparison   (Chart by Tobias1984)
An asteroid was cruising for a bruising when it hit Mars just a few years ago.

What remains is a telltale black-and-blue mark on the red planet’s surface.  Scientists are quite familiar with the red, but not so sure about the black or blue.  Some think that these darker hues could indicate the presence of “exposed ice.”

Although the asteroid was likely less than five feet across, its impact was far greater than it would have been on Earth.  Earth’s atmosphere would probably have shattered it before ground level was reached.
