Talk about social distance!

Milky Way    (NJU/CFA Image)

Turns out that we might not be the only ones, after all.  Mathematicians are now figuring that approximately “36 active alien civilizations” exist “within the Milky Way alone.”

So why haven’t we (or perhaps most of us) heard from them?  First of all, they’re not right around the corner.  Researchers estimate that each is about 17,000 light years away from all others.  That could make for some delayed arrivals.

It could also make for some delayed signals.  Nevertheless, our long-lost cousins might very well be out there. With its possible “400 billion stars” hosting who knows how many planets, the Milky Way may provide milk and honey for all sorts of life.
