When you want to smash
potatoes, grab a fork. But when you’re talking particles, a super-collider
will do the trick.
If that collider happens
to be circular with a 62-mile diameter,
then all the better. Which is exactly what CERN is planning to build, as
long as the funding comes through. At a proposed cost of $23 billion, such revenue
could be hard to raise.
Yet think of the
benefits! This Future Circular Collider would allow for the creation of more
and more Higgs bosons (aka “God Particles”). As researchers observe how
these divine fragments
interact with other particles, science
might then shed some light on
dark matter.
