Batter down! (Photo by Magne Flaten) |
There are times such as
these that all-out hibernation
seems tempting. Wouldn’t it be sweet to
just flip a switch and wake up post-pandemic?
Within bear and bat
hibernations, “multiple bouts of a
low-metabolism state called torpor”
occur. Body temperatures drop and overall energy is conserved. Best of all, these fortunate ones can
hang out in la-la land during arduous
conditions.
Scientists are therefore
studying ways in which human torpor
can possibly be induced. There could be many advantages to this, such as preserving
organs for transplant and waking up on Mars
after a seemingly short nap (the latter being
good news if, and only if, you signed up for Mars
in the first place).
