According to Mark 6:56, Jesus wore a cloak (likely a fringed prayer shawl). A number of biblical passages refer to his sandals. John 19:23-24 states that Jesus had a very basic one-piece tunic (the kind that others of his day would wear as an undergarment only). A 2nd-century historian, Celsus, emphasized the shabbiness of this garb.
This is a far cry from the glossy portraits that we’ve grown accustomed to.
It does, however, well reflect Jesus’ kinship with the poor.
