Scene from Macbeth (Painting by Theodore Chasseriau) |
Ghosts may or may not exist, but ghosting definitely does.
Ghosting occurs when someone cuts off a relationship “without warning or explanation.”
This has become so frequent a behavior as to be normalized within today’s society.
The term was first applied to dating breakups, but soon broadened to include workplace situations. You may have put your heart and soul into applying for a dream job, then never even gotten a response. Conversely, your dream employee may have up and left without giving notice.
Phone conversations are difficult to abruptly end.
In-person meetings are even tougher to avoid.
But today’s texts and e-mails make disappearing a whole lot easier.
Unbeknownst to an anxious sender, the recipient can hit “Delete” faster than a ghost can vanish.
