East New York (Photo by Jim.henderson) |
When New York City became the epicenter of the COVID pandemic, its wealthy citizens did not walk away.
They ran.
The “residential population” of ritzy neighborhoods such as Brooklyn Heights and the Upper East Side decreased by as much as 40 percent “between March 1 and May 1.” But what about East Flatbush and the South Bronx?
No exodus there.
Although the rich fled to second and third homes, the poor were lucky to have even one. Many slept on
infested streets and in subways.
Statistics also show that these wealthy residents are mainly white, whereas New York City is “mostly not.”
