Anglican priest.
When ill with a serious infection in 1623, Donne was placed in isolation. He afterwards stated that “the greatest misery of sickness is solitude.”
Citing the Trinity, Donne believed that God is “fundamentally social.” He also made reference to the multitude of heavenly beings (such as “orders of angels, and armies of martyrs”) that regularly commune with the Lord. Plus, there are all God’s children right here on earth.
Community, whether on earth or in heaven, was central to Donne’s spirituality. One of
his most famous quotes sums this up: “No man is an island, entire of itself...”
