She
not only had to endure the rotten
eggs that were thrown at her,
but also the rotten food that was
served to her. Although
Anthony
was blessed with a “robust
constitution,” even she grew
weary of the “wretched cooking”
along the long road
to
women’s rights.
Bread,
for example, was far from
palatable. Yeast was hard to come by, and “baking powder
was unknown.” This often
resulted in “a heavily indigestible
mass.”
Washing
it down with “muddy” coffee
was also painful. Susan longed
for anything but the ubiquitous
sorghum that was used
to sweeten the deal.
Nevertheless,
Anthony forged ahead. The nourishment she craved
was of the spirit, and “failure
was impossible.”
