“Detained”
is a nice way of saying that Galicia was
held captive for three whole weeks. While in
Border Patrol custody, he was kept “in a small room
with about 60 other people, only one toilet and
no doors or wall.” Meals were inadequate, and
Galicia “lost a lot of weight” while there.
He
was fortunately able to retain the services of
an attorney, Claudia Galan. She
presented Customs
and Border Protection with Galicia’s
citizenship
papers, and he was finally released.
Sadly,
this is not an isolated incident. In 2018, investigative
journalists from the LA Times “found that
ICE had released more than 1,400 people from custody
since 2012 after investigating citizenship claims.”
