It used to be called segregation. In fact, it still is - with almost every other special group. But not with elders and the severely disabled. With them it’s often called “skilled nursing facilities.”
But how skilled is a severely understaffed facility?
How skilled is a facility that covers up its flaws? And how
skilled is a facility that blocks the flow of critical information?
The difficulty does not merely lie with those who own and profit from such places, although much of it does. The difficulty also lies with those who assess would-be residents as somewhat hopeless, somewhat irrelevant, and somewhat less deserving of a fulfilling life.
The difficulty does not merely lie with those who own and profit from such places, although much of it does. The difficulty also lies with those who assess would-be residents as somewhat hopeless, somewhat irrelevant, and somewhat less deserving of a fulfilling life.
And it lies with all those who don’t care to know how things really are within the whitewashed walls. Not just during times of national crisis, but during times of personal crises.
