Great White Whale

(Naturalis Biodiversity Center)
When Scott Griffin of Puget Sound cried “Holy cow,” he was actually referring to a whale.  A great white whale, to be exact.

He might also have cried “Tl’uk,” which means “bright moon” in coastal Salish.  This type of grayish-white orca is rare, and seemingly “mystical” to many.

It is also relatively rare for orcas to come that far south.  Pods more likely inhabit the waters off Alaska and British Columbia.

For Griffin, this sighting was a welcome reminder that “there are some good things out there,” even during a worldwide pandemic.
