Which bottle is witch?

Union Charge    (Public Domain)
Before the widening of a Virginia highway, an archaeological dig was conducted.

When a glass bottle surfaced, it was simply thought to be a receptacle for “loose nails.”  After further deliberation, researchers determined it to be a “witch bottle.”

Such artifacts were used by Union troops during the Civil War in order to “ward off evil spirits.”  Nail-filled bottles would be buried under hearths with hopes that the energizing heat would help “to break an evil spell.”
