Great Speckled Cheetah

Although not saintly, the great speckled cheetah is still something to behold.

Hunted to extinction within the forests of India decades ago, cheetahs may soon return.  Permission has been granted by India’s Supreme Court for African cheetahs to be experimentally transplanted to India.

Naysayers are worried that these cheetahs will end up being housed in “semi-captive conditions.”  They question whether India’s current “habitat and prey base” could actually sustain them in the wild.  Concerns have also been raised about “man-animal conflict.”
