Disconnect to Connect

Mongolian Steppe  (Photo by Marcin Konsek)
What do you do when your teenage son seems more bonded with his smartphone than with you?  If you’re “adventurer
Jamie Clarke,” you whisk him away on a trip through Mongolia.

The first weekend that Khobe Clarke spent without cell reception seemed endlessly frustrating.  That had been a few years before, while celebrating Jamie’s 50th birthday at “a remote ski lodge.”  A trip “across Mongolia by motorbike, horse and camel” would be stretching Khobe’s endurance to the limit.

Although his initial response was “No way!” – Khobe eventually became intrigued by the prospect. He and his dad began preparing for it step-by-step.  This brought them closer and closer.  By the time they were sharing yurt time on the bigger steppes, they viewed one another in fruitful new ways.

Such is the power of face-to-face time rather than mere FaceTime.
