Urban Wildlife

Into the Tube    (Photo by SPSmiler)
There is plenty of urban wild life in London's pubs.  But there is plenty more urban wildlife in London's tubes.

Photographer Sam Rowley spent nights on his belly, trying to capture images of the "little black mice" that inhabit this underground world.  These rodents spend their short lives scurrying through "gloomy passages," scrounging for bits of food that passengers unwittingly drop.

After five days, Rowley nabbed the photo of a lifetime.  Two mice were on the platform, literally battling over a tiny morsel of food.  His low-angle shot silhouetted them against an eerie background, and garnered Rowley the Wildlife Photographer of the Year LUMIX People's Choice Award.
