Lending a Hand

Venomous snakes are said to be the orangutan’s “biggest enemy” in the wilds of Borneo.  Humans have also done their share to eradicate great apes through “habitat loss and hunting.”

Nevertheless, friendships develop between members of these two latter species.  The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, run by humans, seeks to protect “critically endangered apes.”

A warden of the foundation was clearing snakes from a
river when a heartwarming event occurred.  An orangutan, perhaps fearing that the warden was in danger, literally offered him a helping hand.  This compassionate moment was captured on film by a safari tourist.
