Like a Thumb

Martin Seligman    (U.S. Army photo)
If science is a forefinger, then religion is a thumb.  They seem to be in opposition, but actually work very well together.  According to Martin Seligman, "...between the two, one can grasp anything."

Seligman is the force behind “positive psychology,” which promotes a somewhat mystical-sounding blend of optimism and hope.  Some make light of these teachings, others downright criticize them.  Nevertheless, humans seem “hardwired” toward a belief in divine qualities.

The results are compelling.  Practitioners often report increased happiness and well-being.  There is an evangelical fervor to their feedback.  And yet, there are important questions to be addressed:  Does positive psychology adequately address the roots of poverty, oppression and disease?  Or does it merely “blame the victim” for not being “positive” enough?
