Although Alpert and Timothy Leary once took LSD every four hours, there was no avoiding the reality of this material realm.
Alpert then began his “search for a more permanent enlightenment.”
After meeting the “Hindu mystic Neem Karoli Baba” (aka “Maharaj-ji”), Alpert turned away from psychedelics and toward meditation. He was
given a new name, “Ram Dass,” which means “Servant of God.”
Ram Dass authored the famous 1960s book, Be Here Now, which
helped to spawn a new dawn of spirituality.
After suffering a serious stroke in 1997, he set a “compassionate and humble” example for “aging and dying without fear.”
