Years before
the Nazis actually gained power,
Einstein had fled Berlin. His close friend
“and fellow Jew… had just been assassinated
by right-wing extremists.” Police had alerted the famed
physicist that he could be next.
From a
secret location somewhere in northern
Germany, Einstein wrote to his
beloved sister Maja. An excerpt from this 1922 letter reveals his growing
dilemma: I’m doing pretty well, despite all the anti-Semites among the German colleagues…
Change
occurs slowly, even among geniuses. It took Hitler’s rise to head of state in
1933 for Einstein to finally seek refuge within
the United States. There he safely remained
unto death. May Lady Liberty
continue to welcome and protect those
suffering from persecution.
