Stan Lee just didn't know for sure

Stan Lee knew a lot of things.  He knew enough to cocreate some of Marvel Comics’ most memorable superheroes.  But when it came to the most memorable ‘superhero’ of all, Lee just wasn’t certain.

When interviewed by Stephen Thompson of the AV Club in October 2009, Lee was asked this question:  Is there a God?  He then responded:  Well, let me put it this way… [Pauses.]  No, I’m not going to try to be clever.  I really don’t know.  I just don’t know.

Lee was raised in a Jewish family, and some of his characters (such as Benjamin J. Grimm of the Fantastic Four) shared this faith.  Comic Book Religion tells us that other characters (such as “Spider-Man”) were Christian.  Then there was the “pagan deity Thor,” as well as “the African religious leader Black Panther.” Humanist Lee leaned toward exploring faith from many perspectives.
