documentaries
out in the wild, and that is to not
interfere with the natural order of things.
Nevertheless,
filmmakers recently broke that rule. When mother penguins and their chicks were
trapped in an icy ravine, the “Dynasties”
crew decided to carve steps into the ice. Chicks that were previously unable to climb
the slippery walls could now step up
to safety.
This was
seen as passive intervention, rather than as
human meddling. No animals were
physically touched, and those who were
saved navigated these steps on
their own.
A comment made
by Matthew Carter seems
particularly relevant. It reads: There’s always the ‘don’t interfere with nature’ argument, but humanity does plenty to destroy it, so we can also give a helping hand if opportunity presents.
