After successfully
completing the first 2500 miles,
Katharina found herself in Snohomosh
County, Washington. There she
had a chance meeting with one of the
locals, Nancy Abell.
When Nancy
heard that Katharina planned to
reach the Canadian border this late in
the season, she went into panic
mode. Nancy tried to warn her newfound
friend about the
dangers of
snowstorms, but Katharina was
determined to continue on.
Although
they parted after only a brief
encounter, Nancy could not shake a
feeling of impending doom. This only deepened when weather predictions were for “two feet of snow
in the mountains.”
Nancy then
called 911 and begged authorities
to search for Katharina. Although
there hadn’t been an official
distress call, Nancy managed to
convince them of the
urgency. The rescue crew then found
Katharina, “frostbit, with maybe a
day to live.”
Katharina
later revealed that Nancy had
saved her in more ways than
one. This loner’s faith had now
been restored in a “really
big way.”
