When thank-you notes were still in vogue

Today you’re lucky if you get a thank you, let alone a handwritten note.  But back in 1841, gratitude was still quite fashionable.

This is evidenced by the Morpeth Roll, a lengthy scroll containing approximately 270,000 signatures.  Each of these John Hancocks was thanking Lord Viscount Morpeth for his years of service as “chief secretary for Ireland.”

Gratitude often yields unexpected results, as has this document.  It went on to become “a window into a specific time in Irish history,” enabling researchers to trace genealogies that would otherwise have been obscured by tragic events such as the Great Famine.
