Vanity Kills

Narcissus   (Caravaggio, 1590s)
Common sense used to dictate that if you’re in the path of a speeding train, it’s best to pull out of the way.

These days, however, people are pulling out cameras instead. With hopes of capturing that perfect selfie, they’re literally risking life and limb.

A study from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences concluded that “259 people died between October 2011 and November 2017” as a result of such folly.  Their average age “was roughly 23 years old.”

This means that they were willing to exchange perhaps 80-plus years of precious life for a fleeting image.  Vanity, thy new name is “selfie.”
