Monarchs On High

Roosting Monarchs   (Photo by Agunther)
Looking up, you might assume that those fluttering orange specks are autumn leaves.

They might instead be monarchs on the move, for this is their season to migrate thousands of miles.  This migration is inter-generational, as it lasts longer than the lifespan of an individual butterfly.

Butterflies have long been symbols of the human soul.  In fact, the ancient Greek word for butterfly is “psyche.”  Ancient Romans believed that the soul flies from the body through a person’s lips.  One of their sculptures therefore depicts a butterfly exiting a dead man’s mouth.  This could indeed be the ultimate migration.
