Silent Witness

Christmas with Grant   (Public Domain)
From its mighty vantage point, the General Grant sequoia has witnessed history for the past 1,650 years.

It has therefore more than earned its two foremost accolades: serving as the Nation’s Christmas Tree (per President Coolidge in 1926) and as a National Shrine to fallen warriors (per President Eisenhower in 1956).

During one of the earliest Christmas gatherings, then-Park Superintendent John White declared:  The [General Grant] tree is a testimony that things of the spirit transcend those of the flesh.

Getting to these early gatherings was no easy matter.  Reverend Jasper G. Havens, who delivered the 1978 Christmas message, “recalled the [first] cold trip of 1926 in the family’s Model-T ford.”

As further testimony to spiritual strength, an annual “Trek to the Tree” continues.  It is sponsored by the Sanger, California Chamber of Commerce on the second Sunday of each December.
