Long Overdue

Charleston, South Carolina made an important leap forward when its city council recently “voted to apologize
for slavery.”

Once a major slave-trading town, Charleston has long had its share of racial violence.  Just three years ago, a white supremacist “killed nine black members of a Charleston church.”

The council did not simply denounce past actions, but also vowed to promote future tolerance. “An office of racial reconciliation” was then proposed.

One councilman compared slavery with America’s current immigration policy.  Two others said that Charleston needs to prioritize economic development.  Racial equality could help to foster such development, while reaching beyond dollars and cents.
