Once a major
slave-trading town, Charleston
has long had its share of racial
violence. Just three years ago, a white
supremacist “killed nine black members of a
Charleston church.”
The council
did not simply denounce past
actions, but also vowed to promote future tolerance.
“An office of racial reconciliation”
was then proposed.
One
councilman compared slavery with America’s
current immigration policy. Two others
said that Charleston needs to prioritize
economic development. Racial equality could help to foster such development, while reaching beyond dollars and cents.
