Insist on Freedom

Young FDR   (Public Domain)
In response to an alarming display of Nazi   power in 1941, then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered his famous “Four Freedoms” address.

The very first of these was “the freedom of speech and expression.”  FDR insisted that people the world over were entitled to this inalienable right.

Today’s American president is still insisting.  The trouble is, he’s insisting on something quite the opposite. Trump is insisting that all active NFL players “proudly stand for the National Anthem,
hand on heart.”  He has directly linked this to their supposed feelings about the military, and about Americans in general.

This type of top-down insistence does not bode well for a free America with First Amendment rights.  This type of top-down insistence erodes the very things that our military fights for.  This type of top-down power deserves more resistance than it does insistence.
