Her Legacy, Our Responsibility

What has been Gena Turgel’s legacy is now our responsibility.

Turgel, the “Bride of Belsen,” recently died at age 95.  The miracle is that she didn’t die years ago at the hands of her Nazi tormentors.

While surviving “stints at four concentration camps,” Turgel managed to assist the dying Anne Frank.  Gena washed Anne’s face and brought her water to drink, as Anne succumbed to typhus.

Just weeks later, the British liberated Bergen-Belsen, and Gena was freed.  Within six weeks, she married one of her liberators, Norman Turgel.  Gena's wedding dress was "made from the parachute of a British paratrooper."

What a story!  But more importantly, what a legacy!  It must never be nullified by Holocaust deniers and neo-Nazis.
