Sea to Shining Sea

Damaged Fukushima Reactors  (by Digital Globe)

Shining seas have been traditionally associated with sparkling sunlight and mysterious moonlight.  But to be aglow with nuclear waste?  That could be far less romantic.

Japan has been seriously considering the idea of transferring Fukushima’s waste water into the Pacific Ocean.  After storing it for almost a decade within tanks that are now “running out of space,” officials soon need to make a decision.

Should they evaporate this waste into the air?  How about injecting it into underground reservoirs?  None of these alternatives seem particularly sound. Have we therefore backed our way into a nuclear corner that has long been warned against?
