Smog, and lots of it! (Photo by DL5MDA) |
It is often thought that taking a nice deep breath of fresh air can help clear the head. But what if the air isn’t all that fresh? Can it then have the opposite effect?
Scientists say yes. Studies have linked the intake of polluted air to such neurological impairments as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Nanoparticles of aluminum and iron have been found within the brainstems of those exposed to dirty air for long periods of time. These particles are remarkably similar to those given off by the “engines and braking systems” of commonplace vehicles.
We don’t have the choice to simply live our lives without breathing. But we do have the choice to clean up our air. It is a protective atmosphere that makes all the difference between a heavenly planet like Earth and a hellish one like Venus.
