Pruning Perceptions

To see or not to see is not only the question, but also the answer.  The answer to survival.

If we were to constantly see all that surrounds us, our psyches would be overwhelmed with stimuli.  The human brain must therefore select what the eyes will consciously see.

Imagine that you’re standing at a train station, scanning the crowd for that one person you’re supposed to meet.  You’ve been told that she’ll be wearing a bright yellow dress.  Your eyes are barely noticing the mass of other colors as they spot a golden streak at the far end of the platform.

Moving objects also tend to catch our eyes. This too is a survival mechanism.  After all, roving predators can be quite the threat.
