It seems that Subway has been serving cake in its so-called sandwiches right along.
The Irish Supreme Court has ruled that what holds footlongs together contains far more sugar than real bread could, would or should. According to Ireland’s “Value-Added Tax Law of 1972,” the sugar content of bread cannot “exceed 2% of the weight of the flour.” Subway’s contains a whopping 10%.
If you’re wondering why the high court was dickering over such matters, it’s because Subway had applied for a tax exemption based upon their “bread.” Who knew that, once again, the mighty might decide: “Let them eat cake!”
