These
denizens of the deep generally live
between 650 to 3,200 feet
below the ocean's surface. When seen on
shore or within nets, they might be cause for
concern.
Japanese legend
has it that “oarfish
appear around big quakes.” During the year before the
Fukushima tragedy, “at least a
dozen… had washed up onto
Japan’s coastline.” Perhaps they can
sense micro changes in the earth's crust.
Seven have
already been sighted this
season. Is this cause for alarm? Hopefully
not.
