Making It Right

According to The Telegraph, there’s a little-known golf custom regarding the tour caddie’s pay.

“Tour caddies typically collect 10 per cent for a win, seven per cent for a top 10 and five percent for any other finish.”  When Matt Kuchar recently won big, caddie David Ortiz expected to also.

Kuchar instead handed Ortiz $5,000 from a $1.3m win at the Mayakoba Classic in Cancun. Either Kuchar is mathematically challenged, or Ortiz deliberately received far less than the going rate.

Ortiz spoke up, and Kuchar eventually did “an extraordinary about turn.”  He publicly and personally apologized, then upped Ortiz’ pay to $50,000.  Kuchar also “pledged a donation” to a number of “philanthropic causes” in the Cancun/Playa del Carmen region.
